A holidaymaker who booked at the "UK's worst seaside hotel" was horrified after claiming to find blood and urine stains in his bed - and says the manager offered him a discount if he booked to stay again. Paul Deery spent three nights at the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton last month, but claims his "horrendous'" room had an "unmade" bed, tobacco left on the table and pubic hair left in the bath. The 39-year-old had book to stay with his friend, Paul Mallon, 40, and paid GBP350 for their stay.

When he doubled down, Paul was given a "final offer" of a 50% discount on his next visit to the hotel - which Paul deemed 'cheeky' as he wanted a full refund and didn't want to "negotiate", nor return to the venue.
Both Paul and Paul were so disgusted by their stay they felt compelled to take COVID tests - which came back negative. Which? magazine slammed the hotel as "one of the worst hotels we've ever inspected" in 2018 and relisted it as such in 2021, condemning the venue with 0.5 out of 5 stars for cleanliness and the same on food. Their brutal review told holidaymakers to "avoid at all costs" and said the regency-style hotel "makes Fawlty Towers look like the Ritz".

"So we get to the room and it's cold and damp. My friend's bed wasn't made so it was pretty obvious that it hadn't been cleaned beforehand. "That'd be bad enough, but during Covid times, it's unacceptable.
Especially when on their website, they guarantee all rooms are following Covid regulations and have regular housekeeping. "There was blood and urine stains on my friend's mattress. My friend actually hadn't noticed the stains at first, because they were underneath the top sheet.
The sheet came up a bit and that's when we saw it. "There was what I can only gather to be pubic hair in the bath. There were tobacco remains on the table.

"Me and my friend went down to see the manager, but he wasn't available. We left a message and were told that somebody would be in touch with us, but it didn't happen. "Because we were there for a mini-break, I didn't want to spend all my time that weekend trying to chase down the manager.
"We had no other alternatives, everywhere else we checked was booked up so we had no choice but to stay there. "We would have moved, but there were no other hotels available. Plus we couldn't get a hold of the manager so we were in a bit of a stalemate.
"They said there was daily housekeeping, but our room wasn't cleaned once. "Me and my friend took Covid tests after our stay, just in case. Paul took the issue further and emailed the hotel's manager, hoping to get a full refund.
Paul said: "When I emailed the manager, he came back saying 'This isn't part of our usual high standard, we'll make sure this never happens again', and offered us a 10% refund, which would have worked out at about GBP30. "I was a bit insulted by that, and I emailed back saying 'That's not good enough'. "Then he came back with an email titled 'Final offer', which I thought was a bit cheeky, as if we were in some sort of negotiation.
"He once again offered the same 10% refund, and 50% off if we were to stay again. I sent an email back saying 'I won't be staying at the hotel again, so the 50% doesn't apply. I want a full refund.' "It's a bit insulting that we're just being ignored.
The whole experience was horrible. I'm into complaining normally, but this was just horrendous. "It wasn't something silly like a crack in the window, this was blood and urine stains.
"We didn't spend too much time in the hotel over the weekend for obvious reasons. It's completely unacceptable, especially for the price I paid." The Britannia website boasts that the 219-room Royal Albion is 'one of the most popular' in Brighton and claims it 'offers character and style in a premier position' while being 'proud of its reputation as a family hotel'.
Britannia Hotels have been contacted for comment.
