Named the UK's favourite supermarket by consumer advice company Which?, Aldi is expanding this year. The supermarket will open 10 new stores across London. Aldi has announced that it will be opening 10 new stores within the M25 by the end of 2021.

The supermarket's expansion is part of its GBP22million plan to build and upgrade stores across London. The London areas where a new store will be built include Dalston, South Harrow, and Haringey. Currently, Sainsbury's is the only big UK supermarket located in Dalston, therefore it is expected that the new Aldi store will be popular with residents of the area.

Additionally, Aldi's store in Feltham, west London, will be upgraded and made bigger. Aldi has said that it hopes to open a further 100 stores in the capital by 2025. The opening of new Aldi stores in areas where discount retailers are scarce is fantastic news for residents wanting to buy more affordable groceries, but the shops will also bring opportunities to those looking for work.

Aldi has announced that the new stores will create 300 jobs, with the supermarket recruiting employees for every level of the business, from shop floor positions to managerial roles. The food retailer is a great workplace option as it offers staff competitive rates. Within the M25, Aldi employees earn a minimum hourly rate of GBP11.07, and this increases to GBP11.32 per hours after two years.

It is also one of the only UK supermarkets to pay workers for breaks taken during shifts. Jade Shallow is the store manager for an Aldi branch in Ewell, Surrey. She told the Evening Standard about the benefits of her job, saying: "I decided to leave my previous role to join Aldi as an assistant store manager, progressing to store manager after just 13 months in the role, and I haven't looked back since.

"I was given real responsibilities from day one, including managing a team, ensuring stock rotation was run effectively and points of sale always looked presentable, as well as supporting the store manager with general management of the store and customer enquiries."

Ms Shallow added: "It's so rewarding to see someone you're working with grow within their role. "And it is extremely satisfying when you get to promote them or put them forward for additional training or projects to aid their development." Although Aldi continues to expand throughout the UK, the supermarket's bosses have said that growing its market share in London is a key focus for them.

Ben Shotter, Regional Managing Director at Aldi UK, said: "Over the next four years we want to change the fact that some people in London don't always have easy access to Aldi's high-quality groceries at the lowest prices."

Aldi has opened multiple new branches in London in recent years, including its first local store in Balham, south London.

Earlier this year, Aldi opened a new store in Little Venice, north London, which became the supermarket's 48th branch in the capital.
