Mitchells & Butlers picked up where it left off before lockdown by outperforming the wider pub and restaurant sector.

The All Bar One and Harvester operator said like-for-like sales in July fell by 32.4 per cent, but had rebounded in August on the back of the chancellor's Eat Out to Help Out discount scheme and the VAT cut, growing by 1.4 per cent compared to the same month in 2019.

Trading in September settled below that level, with like-for-like sales declining by 6.4 per cent up until the introduction of new restrictions.

The sharp fall in sales in July, when the hospitality industry was allowed to resume trading, was blamed on reduced capacity as a result of social distancing and on consumer caution.
